This past winter on the water has been nothing short of sensational. While some seasons call for long trips out to the deeper reaches of the Hauraki Gulf, this year has been a reminder that some of the very best fishing can be found right on the doorstep.
Winter Hotspots Close to Home
Tiritiri Matangi Island has been a standout location. On the channel side, in just 12 to 15 metres of water, the fishing has been steady and rewarding. Big baits and stray lines drifting back in the current have produced excellent results – and the beauty of it all is that anglers don’t even need to leave the comfort of the boat. Sheltered from northerly and easterly winds, it’s the ideal setup: drop the lines, sit back, and let the current do the work.

Further afield, the waters down past Wellington Reef and west past Stanmore Bay have also delivered. The shallows along the Whangaparaoa Peninsula have been alive with solid fish, providing thrilling encounters. The shallow water means hard-fighting fish close in, giving both seasoned anglers and newcomers an exciting experience.
Closer again, Gardiners Gap between Rangitoto and Motutapu has offered some unforgettable sessions. With just six metres of water and plenty of baitfish around, it’s been a hotspot for relaxed, accessible fishing. No sinkers are needed here – timing with the incoming tide and letting the wind gently push towards shore has produced fabulous results. Even small boats can take advantage of this area, making it a spot open to all.
Spring Fires Up
Now, as spring takes hold, fishing is shifting gears. Out beyond Anchorite Rock, big work-ups are already starting to show. It’s a longer run and requires the right weather window, but the rewards are significant. New skipper Oli proved that point when he jumped on the tools and landed a superb 75cm fish in prime condition – his biggest catch so far this season.

More Than Just Fishing
The magic of the Hauraki Gulf has gone well beyond the fishing this year. Bird work-ups have been spectacular, dolphins have been regular companions, and even whales have been spotted breaching in the distance. Every trip has been a reminder that the Gulf offers more than just a day’s catch - it’s a chance to be part of a vibrant and thriving marine environment.
With spring shaping up beautifully and summer just around the corner, now is the perfect time to gather friends, family, or colleagues for a day on the water. Spaces are available, so don’t miss the opportunity to be part of the action.
