Inner Marina Expansion

updated: June 23 2022

Fairway Bay Marina is expanding

Fairway Bay Marina is increasing its berth capacity by 40% – the 32 new berths will bring the total to 85 once complete.

This expansion is considered an exciting development in the Auckland marine industry as it helps cater for an unprecedented high demand for marina berths. Boating has risen in popularity again and facilities are in strong demand due, in part, to challenges with overseas travel contrasted with the world-class cruising waters that Auckland and New Zealand have to offer.

Favoured for its location, Fairway Bay Marina is nestled inside Hobb’s Bay at the end of Auckland’s Whangaparāoa Peninsula and is well sheltered from all wind and wave directions. Being right in the middle of the beautiful cruising grounds of the Hauraki Gulf, which has endless anchoring options, it gives immediate access to great sailing and fishing; it’s just four nautical miles from the beautiful open wildlife sanctuary that is Tiritiri Matangi Island. The marina is also less than a kilometre away from a variety of specialist marine businesses, personal conveniences or a game of golf at the Gulf Harbour Country Club.

Construction Timetable

Fairway Bay Marina was originally developed with future expansion in mind and was excavated to an ideal depth for a marina. This creates a huge advantage when it comes to marina construction as it’s this stage that’s the most time-consuming – with some marina projects, the excavation can be complex.

Beyond the planning, design and resource consent, the key construction stages of this project include manufacturing of all the components, pile driving, assembling and placing pontoons, installing power and water services, gating and security, as well as working through the all-important snag list.

The New Penlink Corridor

The Penlink motorway connection works are expected to get underway in late 2022 and be completed by late 2026. Penlink will form a vital transport link in north Auckland as more people live and work in Silverdale, Whangaparāoa and the Hibiscus Coast.

The new two-lane road and shared walking and cycling path will provide better travel choices and improved travel times between Whangaparāoa and wider Auckland.

This new traffic corridor is great news for the Whangaparāoa community and Fairway Bay Marina; by easing traffic and minimising congestion, especially during the peak hours, it’s estimated there’ll be a reduction in travel time of 25 minutes from Auckland’s CBD.
